
Keeping Outdoor Heaters Alive in the Wild
If you’ve ever run a nightclub or a busy outdoor patio, you know the deal. The weather is basically trying to kill your equipment. Between the humidity, random rain showers, and those wild temperature swings, standard infrared lamps usually just give up. They crack. They short out. They die. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we built our heaters to actually handle the abuse.
The battle against water
Here is the problem: water and hot quartz tubes are a terrible mix. If a drop of rain hits a scorching tube, it cracks instantly. Simple as that. To stop the bleeding, we went with a dual-layer defense. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed housings—the kind of stuff that actually keeps splashes away from the electrical terminals. It just works. Then there’s the fogging. You know that cloudy film that happens when a heater cools down? When it kicks back on, that moisture flashes into steam, creating these nasty hotspots that wear the glass down. We added a special surface treatment to the reflectors and housing to stop that condensation from sticking. No clouds, just steady heat.
The “Catch” (and how to fix it)
Now, there’s a trade-off. When you seal a unit this tightly to keep water out, heat can get trapped inside the chassis. Don’t mount these flush against a wall. Give them some breathing room. If you jam them against a non-breathable surface, you’re going to trip the thermal cutout, and your guests are going to be cold again. Just leave a little gap for airflow and you’re golden.
Making it last
If you want these things to survive for years, not months, pay attention to the wiring. Put them on their own dedicated circuit with a GFCI breaker. Since these live in wet areas, the connection points are usually where things go wrong. We reinforced the cable entries so water can’t “wick” its way down the wire and fry the internals. Do it right the first time, and you won’t have to tear the whole thing down next season.
