
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a great move for staying warm, but let’s be honest: bathrooms are basically steam rooms. And water and electricity? They don’t get along. If your insulation slips up, you’re looking at a short circuit or a nasty ground fault. Here is how we make sure that doesn’t happen. The Shell and the Stuff Inside A cheap plastic cover isn’t going to cut it here. We use high-dielectric materials for the housing and holders because they actually block the current. The real enemy is condensation. When steam settles on a surface, it can create a little “bridge” for electricity to jump where it shouldn’t. That’s why we use IP-rated enclosures. They keep the water out so the internals stay bone-dry. If steam leaks in, you’ve got a problem. Proper sealing stops that in its tracks. Picking the Right Parts The heating element needs to be totally separate from the outer case. We use quartz glass tubes with heavy-duty seals at the ends to act as the first line of defense. But look, no matter how good the build is, you need a backup. That’s where an RCD or GFCI comes in. Think of it as your safety net. If there’s even a tiny leak, the RCD kills the power in a fraction of a second. It’s the only way to sleep soundly knowing the system is safe. Dealing with the Heat Here is the tricky part: heat makes things expand. When you splash cold water on a scorching hot lamp, you get “thermal shock.” Over time, this can crack the glass or make rubber gaskets brittle and shrink. You need seals that can handle that rollercoaster of hot and cold without giving up. But there’s a catch. If you make the seal too tight, you trap the heat inside. If that pressure has nowhere to go, it might actually blow the gaskets right out. It’s a balancing act—keeping the water out while letting the unit breathe. And one last thing: don’t forget the wires. Use cabling that can handle both the moisture and the heat, or you’ll find the insulation burning out right at the connection points.
