Putting a heater in a bathroom or an outdoor area is basically a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’re mixing electricity and water—two things that absolutely hate each other. Standard infrared lamps just aren’t cut out for this. That’s why we stick with IP66-rated housings and explosion-proof quartz tubes. It’s the only way to make sure the unit doesn’t short out or shatter the second a bit of cold water hits it.
Why the “Explosion-Proof” Part Matters
Here is the deal with quartz: it hates “thermal shock.” Imagine a tube glowing at 600°C. Now imagine a single drop of cold water landing on it. The glass shrinks too fast, it stresses out, and snap—it cracks. We use treated quartz because it can handle those wild temperature swings. And if the worst possibly happens and a tube does fail, the glass is designed not to spray shards across the room. It’s a safety net you hope you never have to use.
Stopping the Creep of Moisture
You’ll see “IP66” on the spec sheet. In plain English? It means the unit is tight against dust and can take a high-pressure blast of water without blinking. We use industrial-grade gaskets to seal every wire entry and the lamp housing. It sounds like a small detail, but humidity is sneaky. It creeps into the sockets, causes oxidation, and eventually leads to arc faults. The gaskets keep the guts of the machine dry.
The Trade-offs You Need to Know
These heaters are fast. Like, “instant heat” fast. You don’t have to sit around waiting for a coil to warm up; the IR radiation hits you immediately. But there’s a catch. Those quartz tubes get incredibly hot. You can’t just tuck these next to a plastic fixture or something flammable. You need to give the unit some breathing room so the heat can actually dissipate. And please, for the love of everything, don’t skip the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). If you wire these into a circuit without one, you’re ignoring the most basic rule of wet-zone safety. The hardware is tough, but your electrical panel needs to be just as smart.
