We wanted to build an infrared heater that doesn’t just pump out heat, but actually plays nice with a smart home setup. The first hurdle was the environment. Most people want these in bathrooms or out on the patio—places where water and electronics usually don’t mix. That’s why we went with an IPX5 rating. In plain English? You can hit the chassis with water jets from basically any angle and it won’t short out or start rusting away. It gives you some peace of mind when you’re installing them in “splash zones.”
Why Infrared?
Think about those old heaters that try to warm up the entire room’s air. You’re usually shivering for an hour while the machine hums away. Infrared is different. It’s more like standing in the sun. The energy goes straight to you and the things around you. Getting it Online
To get these talking to your smart home, we use relays or PWM controllers to handle the power. If you’re into Zigbee or Matter, you can hook them into your gateway. The goal here is simplicity. The tech does all the heavy lifting in the background so you can just tap a button on your phone and feel the heat immediately.
The “Gotchas” (Read This Part)
Here is the thing about high-wattage lamps: they are hungry for power. If you’re planning to put a bunch of these on one smart circuit, be careful with your cabling. If the wires are too thin, you’ll get voltage drops. Worse, you might trip your breakers or fry your smart relays. If you’re going over 2kW per zone, just do yourself a favor and run a dedicated circuit. It’s safer and saves you a headache later. One last tip: that IPX5 seal is great for keeping water out, but it also keeps heat in. **Give the unit some room to breathe.**If you cram it into a tight, enclosed space, the heat sink can’t do its job. You’ll end up cooking the filament, and your heater won’t last nearly as long as it should.
