
The Hidden Reason Your Outdoor Heaters Keep Dying
Here is a little secret about IP55 infrared heaters: the heating element usually isn’t what kills them. It’s the lead-wire seal. If you’re putting these on an outdoor patio, you’re basically fighting a war against two things: damp air and wild temperature swings. When that seal gives out, moisture sneaks in and hits the high-voltage terminals. Then you get a short. Simple as that. Why they actually fail Most standard heaters just use basic silicone sleeves. They’re fine for a bit. But then the heat starts cycling—going from freezing cold to several hundred degrees over and over. Eventually, the sealant shrinks. It cracks. Once those tiny cracks open up, oxygen and humidity get right into the wire insulation. The copper starts to oxidize, and before you know it, you’ve got electrical arcing. Not exactly what you want on a patio. To stop this, we do things a bit differently. We use an industrial potting process. Instead of just sliding on a sleeve, we encase the lead-wire in a high-temp thermal resin. It bonds directly to the quartz tube and the wire jacket, creating a gas-tight seal that keeps the oxygen out. The “Invisible” Difference If you look at a spec sheet, a lot of these heaters look identical. But the real magic is in the termination. Cheap assemblies almost always leave a tiny gap between the seal and the wire. We’ve gotten rid of that gap entirely. We use compression-molding so the sealant doesn’t “bleed” or shift when the unit hits its peak temperature. One thing to keep in mind There is a trade-off here. Because the seal is so solid, the lead-wires are stiffer. You can’t just bend them into a sharp angle like you can with the cheap, unsealed stuff. If you force a tight bend during installation, you might actually stress the seal. Just give the wires a little room to breathe. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a heater that lasts three or four winters and one that becomes a fire hazard after two seasons.
