
Dealing with “Cold Spots” in Glassware Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with glass containers that have weird shapes or tight curves, you know the frustration. You put them through the annealing process, and everything looks fine—until you realize there are these stubborn “cold spots” in the recesses. Standard infrared lamps just don’t cut it here. They shoot heat in a straight line, which means the deep curves of your vessel end up in a temperature dead zone. It’s a headache. To fix this, we use gold-coated shortwave infrared emitters. Why the gold? Most quartz lamps just throw out a broad spectrum of heat. By adding a thin layer of gold to the quartz, we basically change how the lamp breathes. The coating reflects specific wavelengths back into the filament. Instead of wasting energy heating up your kiln walls, the heat gets focused and pushed directly into the glass. You get a much higher heat density right where you actually need it. Getting around complex shapes You can’t just slap one heat source in there and hope for the best. We usually set these emitters up in arrays that wrap around the piece. Because these gold-coated lamps pack such a concentrated punch, you can move them closer to the glass without worrying about scorching the surface instantly. This lets the heat soak deep into the thickest parts of the wall. The goal is to get the whole piece to hit that annealing point at the exact same time. No guesswork. The trade-offs (because there’s always a catch) Now, this kind of power comes with a price. That gold coating makes the lamp itself run much hotter. If you’re setting this up, don’t skimp on the hardware. You’ll need mounting brackets made from high-temp alloys and cooling fans that can actually handle the heat inside the chamber. If your airflow is weak, you’re just going to burn out the ends of your lamps. Also, do yourself a favor and wire these into a PID controller. You don’t want to overshoot your temperature. A little too much heat during the ramp-down, and you’re looking at a cracked piece of glass. Not a great way to end a workday.
