
Getting the Heat Right for Mobile Glass Repair
When you’re building a mobile glass repair bracket, you’re basically fighting a war on two fronts: you’ve got almost no room to work with, and your power supply is limited. Most standard quartz lamps are a bit wasteful. They throw heat in every single direction—backwards, sideways, everywhere. In a tight setup, half that energy is just baking your housing instead of actually fixing the glass. That’s why we use gold-coated shortwave infrared lamps. Here’s the trick: a normal clear tube sends radiation out in a full 360-degree circle. But by adding a thin layer of gold to the back of the tube, we create a mirror. Instead of that heat escaping, it bounces forward. You end up with a concentrated beam of heat hitting exactly where you need it. Because the heat is so focused, you can get the glass up to temperature using lower wattage. That means your power supply stays small and portable. And let’s be honest, nobody wants to lug around a massive transformer. We’ve tweaked these lamps to play nice with the voltages found in most mobile power carts. By shortening the tube and packing the filament tighter, we keep the heat high without needing a giant, clunky housing. You can slide these into compact brackets without worrying that the lamp is going to melt your frame. But there is a catch. Since that gold coating pushes all the heat forward, the inside of the lamp actually runs hotter. It’s a trade-off. If you tuck the lamp into a dead-air space with no way to breathe, you’re going to fry the electrodes. To keep the lamp from burning out early, just make sure your bracket has some decent ventilation or a heat sink where it mounts. Give it some air, and it’ll last.
