
Getting Extra-Long IR Units Right for Glass Tunnel Kilns
Let’s be honest: standard infrared lamps usually can’t keep up when you’re running those massive glass tunnel kilns. If you’ve got a huge surface area to preheat, you need something bigger. We’re talking continuous heating units that stretch past 2 meters. But here’s the thing. You can’t just slap a longer tube in there and call it a day. If you do, you’ll end up with cold spots and a mess of electrical issues. The struggle with scaling When we build a unit over 2 meters, the real battle is keeping the heat consistent. We use high-purity quartz glass to protect the tungsten filament, but long runs tend to suffer from voltage drops. To fix that, we don’t just use one long wire. We use linked elements or custom-wound filaments. It’s the only way to make sure the glass hits that softening point evenly across the whole conveyor. No surprises. Avoiding the “Zebra” effect Nobody wants “zebra striping”—those ugly, uneven heat bands that ruin a batch of glass. To stop that, we overlap the radiation patterns of the lamps. It creates a solid wall of heat. You’ve got a choice here: short-wave or medium-wave. If your line is flying, short-wave hits harder and deeper. Just keep in mind that it’ll make your cooling fans work a lot harder. The heat soak problem Pumping that much energy into a 2-meter unit creates a ton of ambient heat. It gets hot. Really hot. If your ventilation isn’t up to the task, you’re looking at melted wiring or warped frames. We use high-temp ceramics for the supports so the lamps don’t start sagging under their own weight when things get cranking. One last tip: wire these into dedicated zones. It’s way easier to tweak the heat at the start of the tunnel without messing up the end. It gives you a much smoother temperature gradient, and your glass will thank you for it.
