How it actually works
These units use short-wave infrared. Instead of trying to heat up all the cold air around you—which is a losing battle outdoors—they beam heat directly onto you. It feels like standing in the sun on a crisp October morning. We keep the internals tucked away in a sealed chassis to keep the dampness out. But here is a heads-up: these things pull a lot of power. You can’t just plug them into any old outlet. Make sure your wire gauges and breakers are up to the task, otherwise, you’ll be staring at a tripped breaker the second you try to get warm.
Bringing in the “Smart” stuff
There is nothing better than hitting a button on your phone and having your patio feel like spring in about three seconds. To do this, we just pop in a smart relay or a Zigbee/Wi-Fi controller. Think of the smart switch as the middleman between your phone and the heater’s power supply. The best part? There’s no waiting. No “warming up” period. You tap the app, the relay clicks, and you feel the heat instantly.
A quick warning on the wiring
Here is the catch. Smart relays are great, but they aren’t designed to carry the massive electrical load that a high-wattage heater needs. If you wire the relay directly to the heater, you’re probably going to fry the switch. The fix is simple, though it adds a little bulk to your electrical box. You use the smart relay to trigger aheavy-duty contactor. The relay tells the contactor to flip the switch, and the contactor handles the heavy lifting. It’s a small extra step that keeps your gear from melting.
