
The Headache of Long-Distance Heating (And How We Fix It)
If you’ve ever tried to build a glass bead annealing tunnel, you know the struggle. You need a steady, unwavering heat profile over a long stretch. But here’s the problem: most off-the-shelf lamps stop at about a meter. If you try to just string a bunch of small bulbs together, you end up with “cold spots.” For glass, that’s a disaster. You can’t have your beads hitting a dip in temperature halfway through the tunnel. That’s why we don’t do “standard.” We build custom infrared units that stretch past 2 meters, giving you one continuous line of heat. Keeping it even When you’re dealing with a heating element this long, physics starts to fight you. You get voltage drops. You get “dark ends” where the lamp just doesn’t get hot enough. To stop that from happening, we obsess over the wattage and voltage. We make sure the power is spread perfectly across every single centimeter. We also wrap the tungsten filament in high-purity quartz. Why? Because it can handle the brutal heat of annealing without warping or sagging. The nitty-gritty of the build We set these units up in continuous rows. No gaps. No breaks. Just a constant soak of infrared radiation for the beads. Depending on how deep you need that heat to penetrate, we can swap between short-wave or medium-wave output. But let’s be real: a 2-meter glass tube is heavy and fragile. It takes a beating during install. To keep things from breaking, we use reinforced end-caps and heavy-duty connectors. We also use a rigid mounting frame. Without it, the quartz can actually bow under its own weight once it hits peak temperature. Nobody wants a melted mess on their shop floor. A few things to keep in mind These long-form units put out a massive amount of heat. It’s powerful stuff. Just remember that all that energy has to go somewhere. Your kiln’s chassis is going to feel it. Make sure your cooling fans and vents are actually up to the task—if you don’t pull the excess heat away from the electrical terminals, you’re going to fry your wiring. Also, keep an eye on your power supply. If it’s not balanced, your filaments will wear out unevenly, and you’ll be replacing lamps way sooner than you should.
